Huge Potential to Religious Tourism: Ambassador of Sri Lanka Cultivates "People-to-People" Spiritual Connections
MEDAN, INDONESIA – His Excellency Jayanath Siri Kumara Colombage, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Indonesia and ASEAN, concluded a high-level three-day diplomatic mission to North Sumatra Province, spanning from 5 to 7 August 2024
During the visit, he accompanied by the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Indonesia in Medan, Joefly J. Bahroeny. The visit aimed to strengthen the "people to people connection" between Indonesia and Sri Lanka in business, tourism, culture, and education.
In his statement to reporters, he said that the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Sri Lanka, which has lasted for more than 70 years, needs to be strengthened again after being interrupted, due to Sri Lanka economic crisis in 2022, and also due to the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.
A significant portion of the visit was dedicated to exploring religious tourism. With 72% of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist population, Ambassador Colombage emphasized the profound historical and spiritual link between the two countries.
Ambassador Colombage inclusively expressed his interest in strengthening religious tourism exchange with 15-days tourism package to Sri Lanka for Indonesian.
This has huge potential for religious and cultural visits between two countries in the future to create a "spiritual bridge" to sites like Borobudur and Muara Jambi.
