The Sane Society: The Trap of The Intellectual Elite

One of my professors asked me to write summary of one of eights books he provided. I chose The Sane Society.
In The Sane Society, social philosopher Erich Fromm asks a critical question: Can an entire society be mentally ill?
Fromm argues that Western socio-economic life creates a deeply unhealthy and unstable environment which led to high rate of suicide rate amongst wealthiest countries such as Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden and The United States.
Are we sane? He asked from the very first chapter of his book. He did not mention what are the core reasonings of sane and insane. He wrote explanation without balanced data. He basically needs to provide relevant analytical data to complete his foundational thoughts.
Fromm mentioned 90% of his people are literate, while the amount of everyday contents found on television, radio, movies were trash to most men. In fact, because of their advanced literacy rate, they produced many high quality news, features, and movies for the whole world. It is true that this philosopher just complaining that everyone does not follow his rigid rules of what is "a proper life" and how to walk through it.
There is a huge element of elitism in looking down from an academic tower and deciding whether this community is sane or insane. Actually I do wonder, is Fromm sane or the rest of the world goes insane?
His sweeping generalizations read less like a scientific diagnosis and more like a personal grievance against modernity.
The Paradox of Erotic Love
In the page 31, he stated "there is only one passion which satisfies man's need to unite himself with the world, and to acquire at the same time sense of integrity and individuality, and this is love".
In between all type of love he described, I am particularly interested in erotic love. Fromm defines erotic love as the craving for complete fusion and total union with one another. This implies an indication of Christian theology about love. It is written, "the two shall become one flesh", a famous biblical quote from Genesis 2:24. It describes the deep physical, emotional, and spiritual union of a man and a woman in a marriage.
He states it is fundamentally different from other forms of affection due to its exclusive trajectory. Erotic love always begins between two distinct, separate individuals. They start as strangers, each walled off by their individual identities. The psychological and physical drive of erotic love breaks those individual walls down. When the relationship succeeds, it yields a deep state of "at-onement". He seems to borrow the thoughts of Chritianity into his book: The Sane Society.
Last Thoughts: The Synchronization of Duality
I am deeply concerned, whether this book talks about socio-phenomenon, globalization, or the art of loving (or from the perspective of theology). When someone sets themselves up as the lone judge of what is "sane" and paints the rest of the world as "insane", it absolutely comes across as an egocentric theory rather than universal truth or at least universal philosophy.
Therefore, before I am puting my last ultimatum, and to balance his emotional weight, let me put metaphor a little bit: A full day requires both day and night. Similarly, the human experience naturally includes both sides. Look at Ardhanarishvara (half-man and half-woman) that explicitly represents the inseparable unity of the masculine and feminine principles of the universe, or both man and woman exist in everyday life, there is duality everywhere.
Thus, everything is about the synchronization of the duality.
Whether a community is insane cause they, themselves trying to watch trash on television, or the other trying to pose Yoga, neither of them is bad. They are human, Fromm, remember that. Do not try to de-escalate humane things over superficial high-stake philosophy from the Pennsylvania tower.
"Duality is a life and life is a duality. Both cannot exist without one another."
